Summary A few years ago, we reviewed Netfirms and wrote that "Customer service is inconsistent at best, the domain control panel is buggy and the feature rich site builder is a bust." After a recent, glowing review of Netfirm's E-commerce Pro Shopping Cart in the Wall Street Journal and in light of its recent $5.95 domain discount program, we decided that Netfirms was worth another look. Over the last year, Netfirms has totally revamped its control panel and customer service support. It now offers one of the most usable control panels that we have reviewed, and customer service has definitely gotten better, although we do think that GoDaddy still does a better job in that respect. Given these drastic improvements and the stellar domain discount for new users, Netfirms has become one of our favorite registrars. Services Netfirms offers more limited domain registration opportunities than many of its peers: customers can solely register the primary TLDs (.com, .net, .org, .biz and .info). New customers can purchase domains for $5.95. Clearly, this is a great deal; however, there are a few caveats: customers can purchase up to 5 domains at the discounted price before it increases to $9.95 per domain, and domains renew at $9.95 per year. Domain and email management are also above average with many new features. For instance, we added five domains to our account and found that we had the ability to create unique email addresses and web folders for each domain name. However, there is no IMAP or POP3 support, and you cannot use the email account to send email newsletters (there is a cap as to how many contacts you can send emails to), so you may need to purchase a premium email package, if you plan to use the domain for your online business. Size Netfirms is one of the largest domain name registrars and web hosts. Currently, it manages over 1.2M domain names. Customer Support Netfirms service has dramatically improved from the last time that we reviewed the compamny. We have called technical support three times now and have never had to wait more than two or three minutes for a technician to answer. Room for Improvement (1) Netfirm's domain control panel has improved, but it is still not up to par with the control panels found at Aplus.Net or Dotster. (2) Netfirm's promotional discount is a good deal, but it is not anywhere near as good as it looks at first glance, which turns off many customers. |
