Gaming Domain Name Sales in July: $1,051,172
06, August 2007
July was another huge month for premium gaming domain sales! Led by Poker.de's near million dollar sale by NICIT.com at the DOMAINfest action in Amsterdam, various parties paid over $1.1 million dollars for video game/gambling domains in July.
PartyPoker.com is the new owner of Poker.de for a cool $957,937. While the price tag may seem steep, PartyPoker regularly pays out between $75-$150 CPA to affiliates per registered sign-up, and they say that this domain already generates more than 1,000 uniques per month. Given that hefty CPA, even assuming relatively conservative conversion rates, they should recoup their investment over the next five to six years, if not sooner, in terms of affiliate commissions that they would have been willing to pay for those sign-ups.
This month's list again features a variety of international country codes, as online gambling companies diversify away from the US market in favor of European and Asian markets. Besides Poker.de's sale to PartyPoker, the German TLD made one more appearance with PokerBlatt.de for $3,435; the French TLD showed up with a $1,654 sale of AbsolutePoker.fr; and, the Cocos Islands TLD rang up a $3,000 sale for Casinos.cc. All of these sales occurred at Sedo, demonstrating Sedo's ongoing dominance of international TLD sales.
Sedo also scored another couple nice .com sales with VideoGamer.com for $6,000, AsiaPacificPokerTour.com for $5,400, and Casinospiele.com ("casino games" in German) for $4,425.
In contrast to Sedo, NameMedia's Afternic/BuyDomains one, two punch continued its dominance of .com TLD video game domain sales. It sold six premium gaming domains this month for just about $15,000: GamePreview.com for $3,615, GameWar.com for $3,100, FunGaming.com for $2,500, GameTeam.com for $2,400, GameRating.com for $2,200, and InGame.net for $1,250.
CheapGames.com, BuyCheapGames.com, and BuyVideoGames.com were snapped up for $45,000 total at Moniker's T.R.A.F.F.I.C. East Auction (Moniker helped sell over $1.2M in domains at the auction in total!).
Finally, SnapNames sold CasinoListings.com for $2,856 (nice buy at that price!), and Gualcomm sold Gamble.us for $6,400 (I suppose that purchase is similar to a call option on the federal government making online gambling legal, in which case it will have been a great investment).
Note: Gamble.mobi was picked up earlier this year for $33,000, a number that raised some eyebrows, since "gamble" is not one of the better gambling keywords. Gamble.us may actually be a considerably better purchase in some ways, given many offshore gambling companies desire to appeal to US bettors, often in blatant violation of federal law.

Steal of the Month: GameRating.com for $2,200. That is a great video game domain at a bargain price. We're very surprised that the experienced team at BuyDomains would part with that one so cheaply.
Dog of the Month: In our opinion, there were no particularly bad purchases this month. We don't think that GameWar.com at $3,100 was a particularly wise buy, but that is simply because we are aware of quite a few gaming domains with better keywords that are selling for lower prices and which have a similar brand message. That said, it hardly qualifies as a "dog." We think that the buyer will probably make a slight return over the next few years, given the strength of the domain market and the growth trajectory of global, online gaming.
