Summary GoDaddy offers the widest range of domain registration services, best customer service and is the most financially secure of all of the domain name registrars. That is not to say that GoDaddy is perfect (we gave it 8/10 stars for a reason!); however, it generally offers more bang for your buck, for the average domain name holder, than any other registrar. If you have a high traffic site, which receives over 500,000 uniques per month or if you have a Flash intensive site, then we would suggest that you host your website elsewhere, because GoDaddy's dedicated server solutions are not as good as the ones found at many of its competitors (the shared hosting solutions are decent, but again, you can do better). Services GoDaddy offers excellent prices for all of the primary TLDs, including .com, .net, .org, .biz and .info, as well as all of the major and secondary interational TLDs, including .de, .co.uk, .cn, .in, .jp and many, many more. GoDaddy almost always has one or more promotions running for particular TLDs (currently, .mobi domains are only $8.99; last month, .tv domains were only $9.99, both of which are great deals!). We would suggest that you constantly check back with us to see what promotions GoDaddy (and its competitors are currently running). You can receive a discount on any domain purcahse ($1.99), if you purchase a non-domain product, such as hosting, a SSL certificate or email account. Clearly, this is a great deal for a webmaster that only plans to register one domain and concurrently purchase a shared hosting package, as GoDaddy will cover most of your registration fee for the first year. Size Approximately 1/6 of all domain registrations are processed by GoDaddy; this is twice as many as its nearest competitor. GoDaddy's size should help to protect your domain investment. GoDaddy's CEO and founder, BoB Parsons, has approached a variety of boutique investment banks, such as SG Cowen, regarding a potential IPO, so GoDaddy should be particularly vigilent in protecting your domains security over the near term, so as to avoid tarnishing its reputation before its eventual offering. As the RegisterFly.com fiasco demonstrated, financial security is an important characteristic to analyze when choosing a domain registrar. Customer Support GoDaddy's customer support is best-in-class and occurs through e-mail, online help and toll phone support. We have never had to wait more than a few minutes to speak with a live, support agent, and GoDaddy has extremely knowledgeable technicians. GoDaddy's Discount Domain Program You can receive a 20% discount on registration prices if you join the "Discount Domain Name Program" for $89.99. This purchase comes with GoDaddy's cash parking program, 5 free appraisals and access to the registrar's domain name aftermarket - TDNAM.com). We highly recommend that you join this program, if you have 100+ domain names, as you will quickly save money on your portfolio's annual registration fees. It may make more sense to go with Moniker's discount domain program, if you plan to register 25-100 domains over the next year (Moniker does not charge an annual fee for customers to join its discount service; however, its prices are not quite as good as GoDaddy's discount service, there are quantity restrictions and you need to pre-pay for your bulk registrations. Room for Improvement (1) GoDaddy's domain control panel is functional and makes it reasonably easy to manage a large number of domains, but at times, it can be a little clunky. Time for an upgrade! (2) During the check out process, GoDaddy agressively tries to upsell consumers premium services, which is pretty annoying. In our opinion, GoDaddy should bite the bullet and offer many of these services for free, particularly WHOIS privacy and email forwarding. |
