Summary In 1995, Network Solutions convinced the US government to give them the sole right to sell domain registrations. Thankfully, Network Solutions is no longer a monopolist; it has tons of competition. However, this competition does not seem to have improved Network Solutions very much. For that matter, as opposed to making any serious attempt to improve their domain registration services, they have reacted by pushing money into silly marketing campaigns and registrant spamming to entice people into taking advantage of various services, many of them useless or overpriced. Unless you are interested in Network Solution's web design capabilities, you should never, ever use this registrar. It preys on uninformed consumers, charging up to 5x market prices for, by and large, inferior services. Services Through Network Solutions, you can register the following TLDs: .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info and .us. Each TLD costs $34.95. For comparative purposes, Netfirms is currently charging $5.95 to register the same TLDs. Moreover, for this price, Netfirms offers free domain forwarding, WHOIS privacy and an email account; Network Solutions charges extra for each of these value-added services. Adding insult to injury, Network Solutions just announced that you can now register a .com for an hundred years for $999, as though this was the bargain of the century. Any consumer who agrees to this deal is, essentially, contracting with Network Solutions to pick their pocket for the rest of their life time. Network Solutions website is extremely difficult to navigate. After you have decided to register a domain, the company constantly tries to upsell value-added services, which are similarly overpriced Finally, Network Solutions domain name control panel is extremely cumbersome should you need to bulk manage a large number of domains. Size Network Solutions no longer releases statistics as to how many domain are under its supervision; however, given the fact that the company employs over 500 support personnel globally, we assume that it is still one of the ten largest registrars/web hosts in the world (and probably the most profitable!). Customer Support Customer support is one of Network Solution's strong suits. It occurs via email, as well as toll free phone support, and it is 365/24/7. The support personnel who we have spoken with have been extremely knowledgeable. Room for Improvement (1) Network Solutions should drastically lower its prices. If it can maintain its superior level of support and offer a strong package of free features, including free domain forwarding, WHOIS privacy and email forwarding, then we think that it will be fair for Network Solutions to expect $8-10 per year for the primary TLDs. (2) Network Solutions also should improve the usability of its site, domain control panel and webmail interfaces. Currently, Network Solutions makes its consumers jump through too many hoops to do otherwise simple things. |
